Monster Squad (1987)

For my return after a 3-year absence from blogging, I decided to select this year's movies by dice roll. 2 24 sided dice were thrown to choose a Style of Horror-movie, and a "scare" type. This is adapted from an idea shamelessly stolen from Random Number Generator Horror Podcast Number 9.

For today's movie, I threw a 5 for PG/PG-13, and a 2 for Werewolf

For one day every 100 years, a long-forgotten and usually indestructible amulet, capable of banishing Evil from the world, becomes venerable.
That day is fast approaching, and Dracula has put together a band of monsters (Himself, The Mummy, The Wolfman, Gillman, and Frankenstein's Creature) to seek and destroy The Amulet.
Unfortunately for the monsters, a group of horror-movie loving kids have just got hold of Van Helsing's diary, and learned of the amulet themselves... and now find themselves standing against the forces of evil.

Smiley (2012)

An internet-legend claims that if you visit a random video-chat site, and type "I did it for the lulz" three times, "Smiley", a killer with an emoticon carved into his otherwise featureless face, is supposed to appear behind your chat partner... And kill them.
Not wanting to move into the dorms, college freshman, Ashley, moves into a house-share with a stranger, fellow freshman, "Proxy", a keen user of 4chan's /b/ image board (home of Anonymous).
Proxy takes Ashley to a party organised by her fellow /b/tards, where she learns about, the myth of Smiley, and witnesses it for her self when a boy that the party invokes him on a chat-roulette style website.
Later, to prove to themselves that it was a prank, Proxy convinces Ashley to try it for herself... And it works.
When the boy who tried it at the party turns up dead, it seems that the legend of smiley isn't told in full; after killing the victim, Smiley comes after the person who summoned him; And it looks like Ashley is next...

THIS REVIEW IS ALSO POSTED AT THE BLOG I CONTRIBUTE TO YEAR-ROUND.

Cabin in the Woods

Partial synopsis (explanation as to why only partial, after the synopsis):
A group of 5 college kids (A Jock, his slightly dippy girlfriend, her book-smart "good-girl" freind, a stoner, and the Jock's friend who's new to the area) go off to a remote cabin in the woods for a weekend of partying and hanging out. After ignoring the thinly veiled warnings of a creepy old local they meet at the near-abandoned gas station, they arrive to find the cabin is run down and spooky, but they stay anyway.
Bad things happen.
Sound familiar? It should!
Think you know the story? You don't!

One Eyed Monster

The opening of the movie tell us that:
"In February 2007, ten people went to the remote mountains of Northern California to shoot an adult movie. What happened next was something no one expected, but everyone saw coming."
Which is a coy/funny way of saying
Ron Jeremy (playing himself) gets hit by something from space; at first he seems fine, but then his penis becomes detached, and goes on a killing spree.

The Descent: Part 2 (aka "The De2cent")

Note: For the first time this year, I'm going to give a very quick one-line review BEFORE the synopsis; this is because the synopsis has big spoilers for the excellent 1st movie.

One line review: Enjoyable enough, but lacking all the elements that made the first film excellent, The Descent 2 feels like less of a sequel, and more like a Platinum Dunes remake of the first one.

SPOILERS FOR "THE DESCENT"  (But not "The Descent: part 2") FOLLOW:
