The Blob (1988)

A meteor crashes on the outskirts of a small town, containing a near-formless creature; a pink blob.
The blob is hungry, grows when it eats, and it's favourite food... is us.

Ah 1988, it's easy to forget in the post-saw years, but there was a time, not that long ago, when horror movies were allowed to be FUN. When gore didn't mean brutal, and realism took a back seat to 'cool' when it came to effects, when things couldn't be enhanced later and latex and corn syrup were still the best way to make an audience squirm.

Sometimes it take a silly 80s movie (or a silly 80s remake of a silly 50s movie) to remind us what we're missing!

Show me a CGI head getting pulled down a plug hole and I'll scoff! Show me a Latex head doing the same thing and I'll punch the air - Strange, but true.

So yes, I loved the hell out of this movie; yes, I do love Saw, but horror is a diverse pallet, and it was refreshing to see a colour I haven't used for a while.

Shawnee Smith (Saw's Amanda Young) is on hand to help bridge the gap for those of you weary of reminding yourself how great a fun movie can be (and she was 18 in this - so it's okay to notice that she was hot back then too) and on fine form.

Before the horror kicks is we have some great teen humour, even once the blob surfaces, there are some laugh out loud horror set pieces, but the whole thing has enough surprises to keep the bits that are supposed to be tense form being silly; the heroes aren't necessarily who you think they'll be and some people you'd have put money on seeing the end credits don't make it far into the 2nd act!

  1. I would probably hate this. Don't generally go in for this sort of movie at all.
