Them (Ils)

A couple are attacked in their own home by a gang of youths in hoodies.

I've already seen The Strangers, which is often called a remake of this film; although aside form "couple attacked by strangers inside a house" (and the fact that both claim to be "Based on true events") they have little in common. That said, it was difficult not to compare the two.

One thing that Strangers would go on to get right, was to let us see the attackers long before the victims did; thus building suspense. Here, we're half way into the movie's runtime before anything other than day-to-day life happens, and once it does, it escalates almost at once into the invasion; with our couple fully aware that there are people in the house; in an attempt to ramp up the suspense  it's a while before we actually lay eyes on the intruders; but this ended up annoying me, as often they would vanish with superhuman speed.

It's not really until the films final act; where it stops being a forerunner to The Strangers and starts being a forerunner to Eden Lake (which, by the way, is a far closer film to this one than Strangers ever is) that it got my attention - the segment where the hoodies chase our couple through some abandoned sewers or drainage pipes is superb; but all too short (at least in relation to the rest of the film)

Not as good of a film as either of those I have compared it to, but arguably with a better ending than either; I won't brand this one "recommended", but I would advise that its worth a quid (and currently at Poundland for exactly that) or a look-see if you catch it on TV.
